What is TRICARE for Life?

TRICARE For Life (TFL) is Medicare-wraparound coverage if you are TRICARE-eligible and have Medicare Part A and B, regardless of age or place of residence. Coverage is only for those with Medicare and who are TRICARE-eligible. Coverage doesn’t extend to family members.

• Enrollment not required
• Coverage is automatic if you have Medicare Part A and B
• Your TFL coverage starts the first day that Medicare Part A and B are in effect
• You must pay Medicare Part B premiums
• Coverage is available worldwide

How does TRICARE for Life Work? 

There isn’t an enrollment card for TRICARE For Life. All you need is your Medicare card and military ID as proof of coverage.

• In most cases, your provider files your claims with Medicare.
• Medicare pays its portion and sends the claim to the TRICARE For Life claims processor.
• TRICARE For Life then pays the provider directly for TRICARE-covered services.
• Generally, you'll have no out-of-pocket costs for services that both Medicare and TRICARE cover.
• You’ll have out-of-pocket costs for care that isn’t covered by Medicare and/or TRICARE.

Will I Lose TRICARE for Life if I enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan? 

No. Medicare Advantage Plans, sometimes called "Part C" or "MA Plans," are an “all in one” alternative to Original Medicare. Private companies approved by Medicare offer these plans. These "bundled" plans include:

• Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance);
• Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance); and
• Additional benefits (For example: dental, prescriptions, fitness)

If you enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan, you still have Medicare. Medicare is still your primary coverage, and TRICARE For Life is the second payer for TRICARE-covered services.
